Different cultures/different tipping points

Different people have different tipping points before they are willing to be persuaded to lose a bit of their freedoms. According to this article the tipping point for Australia was only 1 mass shooting which resulted 35 deaths in 1996. As a response to this tragedy politicians from all parties came together to ban the weapon used in the crime (AR-15). Unlike Australia, our mass shootings seem to have done little to motivate both sides to come together for solutions. My personal tipping point was the Columbine massacre and (like the Aussies) I was persuaded that our society would ultimately become significantly safer if we all volunteered our personal freedom to purchase the same rapid fire gun that was used in the crime. My personal opinion is that mass shootings will have to become much more commonplace before we can come together to solve this problem because millions of Americans aren't motivated to elect politicians who support gun safety measures.
