When I coached my kids before high school.....
they played soccer in the fall and baseball in the spring, basketball in winter along with skiing. I wouldn't let my son play football or throw a curve ball until he got into high school. My son graduated from high school 6'4" 295 and had scholarship offers. My daughter was a swimmer who went to state in the 200 meter free style. The reason I'm telling you this is because they had a taste of all the sports and decided they liked swimming and football in high school which was my promise to them. They both had many chances to play on more competitive teams in sports but I wanted them to taste them all and I told them no, enjoy each sport you play and you can decide when you get in high school. My son plays golf with me at 40 years old and my daughter skiis with me a couple times of year. Not saying this is good for everyone but they now enjoy watching all sports because they played most of them and can relate. My son in law was a very good hockey player but when he went into high school they wanted him to move to Chicago to play in the more competitive leagues then into to junior leagues. He did it for one year and quit hockey forever, he said he was burnt out on the sport. He hasn't skated since. I think burn out is a big thing, but if a child really wants it then he should commit to it. Developing passion in life is what I, and other parents, try to do. It worked for our family and now I have two wonderful parents to my 6 grand children. Good luck and enjoy the ride!
