An interesting note about Kaiir Elam's commitment to Fla ...

I watched his commitment announcement live on ESPN, and something struck me as very strange. When the time came to make his reveal, he first pulled out a UGa hat, then immediately tossed it (kind of a fake out-move), then put on a UF hat, announced that he has chosen Fla, then stood up and did that gator jaw thing excitedly, with lots of cheers from the audience. But then almost immediately his tone changed, as did that of his parents. Almost as if his heart wasn't really into it, like he really wanted something else, but felt an obligation to go with Fla for reasons other than it being the place he really wanted to go. The tone was sort of sad, and both parents seem to have tears as well.

Adam Munsterteiger at Buffstampede mentioned in a video recapping the class that he had heard that CU was a very strong contender for him as of the night before. It makes me think he might have really wanted to come to CU, but just couldn't make it happen when he considered what it would mean for family and friends. His tweet after his visit was extremely respectful and seemed to indicate he was very favorably impressed.

You would have thought a guy like Elam would have been a pretty unlikely fetch for CU, due to distance, and our current reputation, and I think MT came within a last-second whisker of getting him. I think this bodes well for MT's ability to make guys that in the recent past were "out of our league" to come to CU. Maybe not all, but for ones that might be a little closer to a major airport, and or not so closely connected to immediate family.

Elam is gone, and we all now have to focus on the guys we got, not the ones that got away. (He will have a great career at UF.) But I think it a great sign that we were even part of the conversation.
