This might be news, but politicians are public servants elected
by a constituency of US citizens to advocate for that constituency's concerns and issues in government. Talk show hosts and movie stars aren't sent on the behalf of their constituencies to craft bills and attempt to make laws to serve the greater good of all those people they represent.
I don't give an F if a movie star ruins his/her brand (Mel Gibson). That's on them. They don't impact the day to day lives of the populace. I can choose NOT to indulge in their product.
When an elected Governor, a President, a Senator, a Representative, a Supreme Court Justice, is a racist, a sexual predator, a fraud, a liar, it impacts everyone. The trust of the constituency is degraded. You think women feel represented in law with Kavanaugh and Thomas? Do you think African Americans and Latinos feel that Northam or Trump will truly represent/defend their equality as US citizens after dressing in blackface or taking full-page ads out in the NYT calling for the death penalty of the innocent Central Park Five or questioning the citizenship of the first African American President?
That said, if a politician or an SCJ is truthful and transparent before an election or a government appointment, and they reveal their flaws for all to see and are still voted into office or appointed by a group of elected peers, then I might not agree with their collective choice, but I can respect the wishes of the constituency. You?
