It's a no-win situation for the refs

What does it mean "referees should not determine the outcome of the game" exactly, anyway?

Everybody wants the refs to blow the whistle when it favors their team and swallow it when that favors their team.

Refs make mistakes, that's part of the game, so if your entire season rest on a referee's call/or no-call, then sorry, but you've left it up to chance and that's not the ref's fault. The Saints had an entire defensive series to make a stop, plus OT ... on the field, determined by players. The refs blew that one call, but the Saints allowed it to beat them.
