Re: I have been witnessing the work of fire suppression in the forests now for

I'm sure this work is going on at lower elevations and nearer populated areas which is a good thing. But there really is no way to get up to wild areas. No roads, probably not even fire breaks up high.

When I was a kid, our multi-family were staying in a big cabin near Blue Jay/Lake Arrowhead area. 1/2 mile above us was a high point called Strawberry Peak and my dad, uncles and kids would hike up every morning. There was a fire tower up there where rangers could see a sweeping view in all directions and they kept watch for smoke columns.

Well, a fire started but it was far away and we stayed and went to a public pool where ash was falling. When we got back, my Mom was upstairs and throwing stuff out the window to load up the car. There was an evacuation order for us to get out. Except all the men were out and about looking for the fire coverage, etc. Finally they came back as my Mom and aunts were starting to panic. The fire was threatening Strawberry Peak. We evacuated and went down the mountain and home.

Next day it had passed and we were able to go back up again. My brother and I went with an uncle because my Mom had to repack and I don't think she was thrilled about that. But we ended staying for the full two weeks and nothing around us had burned. It had been contained far away from populated areas. Of course that was in the San Bernardino mountains where there still were lot's of pine trees before the beetles got them and started killing the trees off.

That was an exciting experience for all of us and I remember it vividly. I was probably around 11 years old.
